RESOURCE FAIR FOR SOUTH WHITTIER FAMILIES PROMOTES PHYSICALLY FIT MINDS AND BODIES
May 21, 2016 - The Community Resource Center (CRC) collaborated with the South Whittier School District (SWSD), THINK Together, and community health partners to host the 6th annual Whittier Area Health and Resource Fair at Carmela Elementary School. Exhibitors, such as the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, John Wesley Community Health, PIH Health, Whittier Community Hospital, Golden Optometric, and Children’s Happy Teeth Dental, provided physical and mental health resources, as well as dental, eye, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.
Students from the SWSD also participated in a run-a-thon to raise funds for the Community Education Foundation that provides after-school activities such as art and folklorico dance classes at various schools. Current program enrollees performed during the event. In addition, selected students also participated in the Imaginarium Olympiad, an innovation and creativity competition. The students were given an hour and a half to create a structure made out of recyclable materials. The winning entries were judged on practicality, resourcefulness, creativity and teamwork. Additionally, an art exhibit showcased the winners of the annual “Arts for All” district-wide competition.
